Volunteer Job Description
Library Shelver
Purpose of Position: Assists Library staff with the reshelving of books and other library materials. Neat and accurate shelving of library materials enables Library users to locate information and materials that they are seeking and helps the Library to maintain a neat and attractive appearance.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 14 years old.
- Commitment to the mission of the Library.
- Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently.
- Aptitude for detail and neatness.
Essential Physical Skills:
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and to move fully loaded, heavy carts through the Library.
- Ability to bend to floor and reach up to 68 inches to shelve materials.
- Ability to load and unload carts.
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Sorts and shelves or refiles materials.
- Moves materials, including transporting materials through the Library on hand carts.
- Removes requested materials from the shelves.
- Monitors and maintains shelf order.
- Empties bookdrop contents, transferring items to hand carts.
- Removes trash and litter from Library interior.
- Refers patron requests or questions to appropriate Library staff.
- Gives supervisor sufficient notice if unable to keep shift assignment.
- Notifies supervisor of shelving problems or suggestions for improved shelving.
Training Provided:
- Orientation to the Library.
- Training in sorting, filing, and shelving library materials.
Responsible to: Library Services Supervisor and/or Designated Supervisor
Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week
Length of Commitment: Minimum of 6 weeks
Grounds for Termination:
- Failure to carry out assigned responsibilities.
- Breach of confidentiality.
- Unacceptable behavior toward Library users or staff.
