Volunteer Job Description
Reference Assistant
Purpose of Position: Assists Library staff in providing reference services for Library users in accordance with the Library’s mission and Reference Services Policy.
Qualifications:
- B.A. or B.S. degree preferred.
- Commitment to the mission of the Library.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently.
- Aptitude for detail and neatness.
Essential Physical Skills:
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
- Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Assists Library users in locating library materials.
- Assists Library users in searching the Library’s collection, online databases and the Internet.
- Refers complex patron requests or questions to appropriate Library staff.
- Gives supervisor sufficient notice if unable to keep shift assignment.
- Notifies supervisor of problems or suggestions for improved service.
Training Provided:
- Orientation to the Library and the Library’s collections.
- Training in providing reference services according to the Library’s Reference Services Policy.
Responsible to: Reference staff and/or Designated Supervisor
Time Commitment: Minimum of 3 hours per week
Length of Commitment: Minimum of 3 months
Grounds for Termination:
- Failure to carry out assigned responsibilities or to comply with Library policy.
- Breach of confidentiality.
- Unacceptable behavior toward Library users or staff.
