Volunteer Job Description
Adult Literacy Tutor
Purpose of Position: Tutors adults in basic reading and writing, English as a second language and/or GED preparation to enable them to meet personal goals.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Commitment to the mission of the Library and its Literacy Program.
- Punctuality and dependability.
- Successful completion of Basic Literacy Tutor Workshop and/or English as a Second Language Tutor Workshop.
Essential Physical Skills:
- Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Prepares and presents individualized lessons to the adult learner.
- Reviews work done independently by the adult learner.
- Maintains records of the adult learner’s progress.
- Provides encouragement and support to the adult learner.
- Reports progress and developments to the Literacy Coordinator on a regular basis.
- Gives Literacy Coordinator and adult learner sufficient notice if unable to keep arranged meeting time.
- Notifies Literacy Coordinator of problems or suggestions for improvement.
Training Provided:
- Orientation to the Library and its Literacy Program.
- Basic Literacy Tutor Workshop and/or English as a Second Language Tutor Workshop
- In service workshops, as available.
Responsible to: Literacy Coordinator
Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week
Length of Commitment: Minimum of 1 year
Grounds for Termination:
- Failure to carry out assigned responsibilities.
- Breach of confidentiality.
- Unacceptable behavior toward literacy students or tutors, Library users or Library staff.
